According to a report by Geo News on Monday, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has resigned from his position as president of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N). Following his statement that party supremo Nawaz Sharif will take over as party leader, Rana Sanaullah, the president of the PML-N's Punjab chapter, made this step.

The PML-N central committee has set a meeting date of May 18 at 11:30 a.m. in Lahore. Secretary General Ahsan Iqbal has given notices to members in accordance with Article 15 of the party's constitution. It is anticipated that this gathering would formalise the party's power transfer.

With his comeback to leading the PML-N, Nawaz Sharif's political career has taken a dramatic turn for the better. 2017 saw him compelled to resign as prime minister when the Supreme Court permanently barred him for neglecting to register a salary that was recoverable. In the Panama Papers case, the supreme court delivered him a further blow in 2018 by removing his eligibility as PML-N president. A person disqualified under Articles 62 and 63 of the constitution cannot be the leader of a political party, according to the court's ruling at the time.

On January 8, 2024, the Supreme Court, however, eliminated the prohibition against those facing criminal charges from taking part in elections. Nawaz Sharif was able to reenter the forefront of Pakistani politics as a result of this verdict.

Many have speculated about the possible effects of this change in power inside the PML-N on the political dynamics of the nation, with far-reaching ramifications. All eyes will be on Nawaz Sharif as he gets ready to take over the party once more and handle the intricate web of relationships and rivalries that characterise Pakistani politics.
